Stockholm City Hall Wedding Guide

Thinking about a Stockholm City Hall wedding? You’re not alone. It’s one of the most iconic and popular ways to get married in Stockholm, and for good reason. The ceremony is simple, stylish, and takes place inside one of the most beautiful buildings in the city.

But the best part? No two Stockholm City Hall weddings feel the same. You can keep it short and intimate, or turn it into a full Stockholm wedding day with portraits, champagne, dinner, and even a boat ride after the ceremony.

I’ve probably photographed more weddings here than at any other venue in the city – from couples in Saturday jumpsuits to couples in lavish gowns and tuxedos. Stockholm City Hall wedding photos are some of my favourite to capture.

Here are a few reasons why this Swedish national treasure is one of my favourite wedding venues in the world.

No Two Stockholm City Hall Weddings Are Alike

A Stockholm City Hall wedding can look wildly different from one couple to the next, and that is part of what makes it so special.

I’ve photographed small, intimate weddings with just the couple and two witnesses, and I’ve photographed weddings where the couple stepped out onto the stairs and were met by a huge cheering crowd. I’ve photographed weddings that lasted just a few hours, and others that turned into full weekend celebrations.

That flexibility is part of the magic. A Stockholm City Hall wedding can be simple and elegant, relaxed and low-key, or the start of something much bigger.

What a Stockholm City Hall Wedding Ceremony Is Like

A Stockholm City Hall wedding ceremony is civil, simple, and beautifully set in the Oval Room. There are no religious elements, and the ceremony is conducted by an authorised officiant.

The building itself is also a dream for photos. You have gorgeous architecture, beautiful textures, and several lovely backdrops both indoors and outside. That means a Stockholm City Hall wedding works beautifully in any season and in almost any weather.

And with me as your photographer, I’ll make sure we use the location well and get beautiful photos in several different spots.

What Happens After the Ceremony?

One of the best things about a Stockholm City Hall wedding is that it can be just the beginning.

Some couples keep things simple and have me photograph just the ceremony and a few portraits afterwards. Others turn the rest of the day into a full celebration with champagne, more photos around the city, dinner, and sometimes even a boat ride straight from City Hall.

Seriously, no Saturday is ever the same. Whether you want something understated and elegant or joyful and full of energy, a Stockholm City Hall wedding can be the perfect start to your day.

A Magical Piece of Stockholm History

Stockholm City Hall is one of the most recognisable buildings in the city and a true Swedish icon. It was completed in 1923, and the design by Ragnar Östberg is widely considered an architectural masterpiece.

It is also one of the most historically significant buildings in Stockholm. Over the years, it has become a place for both public ceremony and celebration, including the annual Nobel Prize Banquet.

So yes, it is practical and beautiful, but it also carries that extra sense of occasion. Getting married here really does feel special.
